Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Recording Project

Conductor Yajie Ye has recently completed a new studio recording with Pavilion Ensemble, produced in collaboration with Apple & Biscuit Recordings. The project is endorsed by The Max Trust and supported by King’s College London.

The session features two rarely heard choral-instrumental works composed during the Cirencester period of the composer’s life. Scored for voices and chamber ensemble, the pieces reflect a distinctive early style—marked by expressive vocal writing, modal harmony, and intricate instrumental interplay, including moments of improvisation. This recording marks the first professional realisation of one of the works.

Led by Ye and produced by Alex Barnes, the project brought together a dedicated team of singers and instrumentalists committed to exploring the music’s rich textures and emotional depth. The recording process focused on clarity, ensemble responsiveness, and capturing the nuanced character of each piece.

Post-production is now in progress, with release details to follow.
